I have a beginner horse and i want to be able to do extensions and collections within each gait. How do i do this? what should i be doing to work my horse up to this? i know it will take time and patience, and im commited to that. but i need help training my horse on my own. i cant afford a trainer, so i am my own horses trainer.
well, with a beginning horse, you should be sure that he’s balanced and soft in every gait before you start collection and extensions, otherwise he’ll be confused as to what you’re asking him. once he’s happy in each gait and listens to what you’re asking, you can start like this:
stride alterations (collections and extensions) should be asked for FROM THE SEAT. a common misconception with riding is that these alteration are from the hands and legs. these should only be used when training a horse to collect or extend, because that’s what they’re used to.
To ask a horse to extend at first, you should push a little in the seat from back to front, as if you were scooting forward in a rolling chair. If he does not respond, close your leg around him gently, and then almost immediately, touch him lightly in the mouth to let him know that you don’t want to break your gait. if he still doesn’t respond, squeeze a little more firmly, and again, take back. use a kiss or cluck to ask him to continue moving forward. these can be easily taught to your horse on the lounge line. After enough work, the horse should be able to recognize what your asking him to do, and he will start to respond with only the seat aide.
Collecting is the exact opposite, obviously. stiffen your seat and press your weight in the saddle. stop going with his motion to let him know that you don’t want that rhythm anymore. if he does not respond, take back lightly in the reins. to make sure he doesn’t break. close your leg. again, take back until he slows, but always gently. use a voice command like "easy" or "slow" to enforce this: and again, lounge work is great. after work, he will respond simply by asking with the seat.
and never ever ever forget to reward him!!
have fun, and happy riding!
