How do I find out the details about a collection account?

November 302009

I have a collection account on my credit report from my previous landlord. The house was in foreclosure, so I moved out. I sop owe 8000 some dollars, but it is more like 4000. How can I get the collection agency to give me the accounting for this? Btw this is like from 6 months ago, so I dont think they will care if I give them a letter of validation.
I havent gotten any response from them for validation either.

I would call them and ask for it if they don’t send it within a week or so then send them a certified letter for validation if they don’t respond then dispute it with the credit agency’s they will then have 30 days do what they need to do.

Will the credit card companies and collection agencies try to find me in Europe?

November 302009

I have a big credit card debt. I stopped making my payments in August. If I leave the USA and move to Europe will the credit card companies and collection agencies try to find me there? If they find me what will happen? Can they take away my car or other properties, garnish my wages?

They will hunt you down like a dog and take everything you own. Overseas deadbeats are subject to beatings, waterboarding and all sorts of hideous means of collection. Your best bet is to try to live up to your responsibilities by contacting those you owe and attempting to make arrangements with them. RJ

Does the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act apply to a business debt?

November 252009

In other words what I am asking…can a collection agency call your business and tell your employee that you have an outstanding debt that is in collections? How much the debt is for and what year its from?

They will claim that business debt is not covered under the FDCPA because it only covers consumer debt.

Can a collection agency file a negative report to a credit bureau after seven years.?

November 252009

Even if the dept has not been paid? Can a collection agency sell a dept older than seven years and expect to get paid?

It doesn’t matter how old the debt is. The seven year limit is measured from the time the account was determined to be delinquent. If you have a five year car loan and stop paying after four years, it would be delinquent after four years and three months. So the seven years starts then, not when you went into debt to buy the car.

How long should keep records showing I paid off a collection agency?

November 232009

I finished my payments to a collection agency. How long should I keep all the bills and letters stating my overdue balances? Or should I just burn them?

I would keep those records for 7 years. If you had a collection account it will remain on your credit file for 7 years from the date of first delinquency in most cases. You should want to keep those records just in case something is changed or updated in your credit file even years down the road. Tuck those papers away just in case you need them or if you are anxious to burn them, burn them at the 7 years from first delinquency point…

PS - I don’t know if you went this route or not, but in the future offer "pay for delete" agreements with collection agencies. Basically, this is when you offer to pay in full or settle the account for less and in return the collection agency will delete all negative info from all credit reporting agencies. This is a benefit for you as you’re not stuck with the negative account and they get their money…

The source I left below goes into more detail about this as well as other helpful credit info.

Hope this helps & best of luck

how do i find out my collection agencies address?

November 192009

They don’t know my phone number or address so they aren’t harassing me, but i want to pay off my debt. How do I find out which is my collection agency?

If you have the phone number to the collection agency, I would call and ask for an address. If not, you can pull your credit report. Any balances in collection will list the agency, phone number and address. Good luck and yay for you paying off debt!

What are the rules on repo and collection?

November 182009

I have a truck that i fell behind in payments… But then when i got the money to pay them back they denied it. My credit report says they wrote it off but they are now taking me to court over it. What are the rules on collection and repoing? Anything helpful would be great, rude things will be reported.

Here’s a link to the fair debt collections act. It’s not that long and will most likely answer every question you have.

What Collections Agency does Guitar World Magazine use?

November 182009

When I was a minor, Guitar World magazine sent me to a Collections Agency that I payed off right away. I was minor then, and now an adult (18) and would like to take that off my record/report/debt/etc.

I would like to call this collections agency and take care of it right away.

I am about ready to report this "Guitar World Magazine"
They seem to have no scruple in making minors believe
that they owe for magazines they didn’t want nor were
legally able to sign a contract for.

Check your credit record… I can guarantee you that there
is no entry for a "collection done for Guitar World Magazine…

I have the feeling that the "collection agency" that contacted
you was just Guitar World Magazine posing as a collection agency…

I think you should tell this story to a lawyer… they might find this
interesting… I think a District Attorney might find it very, very interesting. Make sure to mention that you were a minor when
you were apprehended by this collection agency…

I just received a letter from a debt collection agency, what do i do?

November 182009

I just received a letter from a debt collection agency for $800 dollars and i dont have much or any money, what can i do? any way to reduce it? and i’m not sure why i owe so much.

The first answer is right - don’t pay right away.
First you will have many questions on how to settle with them, and if it actually does you any good.
Whatever you do, don’t acknowldege the bill until you know what to do.
Asking on here will help - also a good book from a library or bookstore.

$800 could have easily started as a $200 bill.
Add on a couple of years of late fees, and interest it can easily double.
Then when the collection agency gets it, expect fees that can easily double.
That’s how that bill could have gotten to $800.

Sounds like you don’t check them - you should once a year.
